Be Involved

There are many ways to support the mission of the Grinnell Historical Museum!

Volunteer

We offer volunteers an opportunity to use their skills to preserve and share Grinnell history. If you wish to contribute your time, please contact us and let us know about your areas of interest and availability. See examples of opportunities below.

  • Docent: Take guests on guided tours of the museum at the McMurray house and carriage house.
  • Research: Assist with requests for historical and genealogical information.
  • Collections: Organize and photograph historical records and artifacts.
  • Curate: Research artifacts and arrange exhibits.
  • Outreach: Help plan and/or facilitate museum programs.

We offer internships to Grinnell College and Grinnell High School students. Please email the museum if you are an interested student.

More Ways to Donate

  • Donate items to the collection. If you have historical items with ties to the Grinnell area to donate, please contact us. Be sure to include your name, contact information, and a description of the items you are interested in donating.
  • New Building! To donate to the new building at 703 First Avenue, please click here.
  • Consider us for QCDs. In your estate planning, consider the Grinnell Historical Museum as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.
  • Add to our endowment at the Greater Poweshiek Community Foundation. This fund was started in 2010 by Mary and Russ Schuchmann with a donation of $10,000. Income from the fund will help the museum with its operating expenses and other projects. The GPCF provides access to Endow Iowa Tax Credits, which allow taxpayers to receive a 25% tax credit in addition to normal federal charitable income tax deductions for certain charitable gifts.
